From the field

Climbing, safari, Tanzania, birdwatching and the islands — notes with the places we actually run.

Climbing

Climbing Kilimanjaro, Meru and Lengai

Three peaks from Arusha. Kilimanjaro is the Roof of Africa — Marangu from $1,650, Machame from $1,890, Lemosho from $2,180, Rongai from $1,980. Mount Meru is the training climb inside Arusha National Park, from $780 for three days. Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Mountain of God, is a night climb from $320, or two days with Lake Natron from $540. Licensed guides, measured porter loads and a safety briefing before every trail.

Safari

A safari on the northern circuit

From Arusha the classic loop is Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Dawn drives, a picnic on the crater floor, and evenings when the light goes gold. Private safaris use your own 4×4. Group safaris share the vehicle. Safari with kids keeps the drives shorter. An 8-day migration trip starts from $6,998 per person in Comfort.

About Tanzania

What to know before you land in Tanzania

Tanzania holds the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Kilimanjaro and a long Indian Ocean coast. Dry months — June to October and January to February — are strongest for game. Most passports can use an e-Visa or visa on arrival. We meet you in Arusha or on Zanzibar, and the northern parks are run by local licensed guides. Beyond the north we also go to Lake Manyara, Mikumi, Ruaha and Nyerere.

Birdwatching

Birdwatching on lakes, crater and coast

Lake Manyara and the Momella Lakes in Arusha National Park are flamingo country. The Ngorongoro floor adds more at the soda shore. Tarangire holds hornbills, eagles and weavers in the baobabs. On Zanzibar and Pemba the mangroves and tidal creeks bring shorebirds. We slow the vehicle, keep a quiet window, and time the morning for the light — private and group vehicles both work for a birding day.

Islands

Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia after the parks

After the dust, the islands. Stone Town, spice farms, dhow sunsets and white sand on the east coast of Zanzibar. A 7-day Zanzibar stay starts from $3,645 per person in Comfort. Pemba is quieter, with reefs and clove hills. Mafia is for whale sharks in season and empty sandbanks. We arrange the flight or ferry from the northern circuit, and a beach villa or a Stone Town house for the last nights.
